What does your route look like now?

Which pass, card or transport plan do you expect to use? Which cities do you most want in the route?

Is JR Pass always worth it?

No. It tends to make more sense when your route includes several long Shinkansen rides in a short window. If the trip is centered on one city or only a few smaller moves, separate tickets or a regional pass may win.

When does a regional pass make more sense?

If your route stays mostly in Kansai, Kanto, Kyushu or another single area, a regional pass can be leaner than a national JR Pass. Compare the pass price with the true value of the rides you will actually use.

What about transport inside the cities?

For city travel, Suica, Pasmo, Icoca and similar cards are usually the easiest option. In Tokyo, Tokyo Metro and JR East matter a lot. In Kyoto and Osaka, buses, subway lines and local trains can shift the daily cost quite a bit.

How much should you reserve for transport?

A simpler trip can often sit around $20 to $60 per day when city transport and some urban entertainment are mixed together. Once Shinkansen, airport transfers and fast city hopping enter the picture, the budget rises quickly.
